Detection, Classification, and Localisation of marine mammal sounds

PAMGuard

The PAMGuard software has been developed for the Detection, Classification, and Localisation of marine mammal vocalisations using Passive Acoustics.

General information about PAMGuard can be found on our website at www.pamguard.org.

If you're a software developer, then you're in the right place. If you're a PAMGuard user, you should probably download the built Windows, Mac, or Linux installers from https://www.pamguard.org/releases/download.html and get started with our tutorials.

Online help for users is available at https://www.pamguard.org/olhelp/.

Help for developers is available at https://www.pamguard.org/sourcecode.html.

The main repositories are:

  1. PAMGuard contains the main PAMGuard source code used to build the main program.
  2. PAMDog contains source code for the PAMGuard watchdog - a background programme that can keep PAMGuard running no matter what!
  3. PAMGuardMatlab contains Matlab code for unpacking PAMGuard data files.
  4. pypamguard contains Python code for unpacking PAMGuard data files.

Other repositories contain some plugin modules and example code which should help you to get started if you want to write your own PAMGuard module.

There are also many plugin modules for PAMGuard on some or out teams personal Github pages. These are generally also available under similar open source license agreements, but are not considered part of core functionality. In practice, this means that while we're happy for you to use them, we're less able to maintain some of those modules and unable to support them in any way.

We beleive passionatley in open source and all PAMGuard developments are available under the GNU General Public License Version 3 or the open source MIT License.

If you're using PAMGuard in a commercial environent (i.e. making money out of using it) then please consider a donation through the links availabe at https://www.pamguard.org/funding.html. A small percentage of the costs of operating a PAM system at sea can go a long way. We put a lot of time and effort into maintaining this software and keeping it free and we need to justify the time spent doing this to our employers at the University of St Andrews.
